λωτός, ὁ (ein Fremdwort, wahrscheinlich ägyptisch), Name verschiedener Gewächse; – 1) Lotosklee, eine um Sparta u. in der Gegend von Troja wildwachsende Kleeart, die zum Pferdefutter gebraucht wurde u. bes. an Flußufern u. in feuchten Niederungen wuchs, ἵπποι – λωτὸν ἐρεπτόμενοι, Il. 2, 776. 14, 348. 21, 351, vgl. Od. 4, 603 u. Voß zu Virgils Georg. 2, 84 p. 292. – 2) der kyrenäische Lotos der Lotophagen, eine afrikanische Baumart, deren Früchte die aus Od. 9, 84 ff. u. Her. 4, 177 bekannten u. danach benannten Lotophagen aßen; Hom. nennt auch die Frucht λωτός, a. a. O. 93. 97, u. ἄνϑινον εἶδαρ, 84, was wohl nur die vegetabilische Natur dieser Speise bezeichnet, nicht auf die Blüthe zu beziehen ist, u. sagt, sie sei μελιηδής, honigsüß; Her. vergleicht sie an Größe mit der Beere des Mastixbaumes, σχῖνος, die so groß wie die Olive ist, u. an Geschmack mit der Dattel, φοίνιξ, u. sagt, daß die Lotophagen aus ihr auch eine Art Wein bereiteten. Es war nach Her. 2, 96 eine stachlige, nicht sehr hochwachsende Baumart; vgl. Pol. 12, 2 u. Schweigh. daselbst, wie Ath. XIV p. 651, etwa rhamnus lotus od. zizyphus lotus, die noch jetzt in Tunis u. Tripolis beliebte jujuba. – 3) der ägyptische Lotus, Her. 2, 92, eine lilienartige Nilpflanze, deren eine Gattung große, weiße Blüthen trägt; an der Sonne gedörrt, wurde ihr Mark zermahlen u. Brot daraus gebacken, auch ihre runde, apfelgroße, sehr süße Wurzel wurde gegessen, nymphaea lotus; eine andere Gattung trug rosenrothe Blüthen u. in einem zelligen Saamengehäuse, κιβώριον, viele eßbare Bohnen, κύαμοι, die man ägyptische Bohnen nannte, nymphaea nelumbo; – eine dritte Gattung blühte blau, Ath. XV p. 677 c, nelumbium speciosum od. cyamus Smithii. – Als Symbol des Nils, mit dessen Anschwellungen er wuchs, – man sagte in Aegypten »je mehr Lotos, desto mehr Jahressegen« – war er den Aegyptiern heilig; u. von ihnen kam er zu den Indern, wo er ebenfalls als Symbol des Ganges heilig war. – 4) Außerdem hieß noch ein Baum in Nordafrika Lotos, der von der Höhe des Birnbaumes war, gezackte Blätter hatte u. geschmack- u. geruchlose Bohnen trug, Theophr. Er hatte hartes, schwarzes Holz, das zu Bildsäulen u. Flöten verarbeitet wurde; dah. heißt λωτός bei den Dichtern oft die Flöte, Eur. Troad. 544 u. öfter, wie in der Anth. – 5) ein anderer Baum, diospyros lotus, trieb einen kürzern Stamm mit schöner, glatter Rinde, hatte lange, eirunde, unten filzige Blätter u. rankende Zweige, u. trug röthliche, süße Beeren; er wurde in Italien zur Zier der Häuser benutzt, Columella 7, 9; vgl. Voß zu Virg. Georg. 2, 84 p. 294.
